Museum for kids meets its deadline

first_imgLAKE VIEW TERRACE – After a whirlwind fund drive, the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles dodged a financial crisis Thursday by raising enough cash to continue construction. In one month, the museum managed to raise $1.3 million – enough to meet today’s deadline for a matching city loan that will enable it to pay its builder. “This is wonderful,” said Cecilia Aguilera Glassman, the museum’s chief executive officer. “Everybody is ecstatic.” “I think the entire city of Los Angeles has rallied. … The city saw the crisis, addressed the crisis, challenged the museum – and we stepped up.” The museum is now looking for ways to rally Valley support, including future local fundraisers, festivals and its annual museum gala. “This is a great day for the city – I’m so proud,” said museum founder Bruce Corwin, co-chairman of the museum board. “Now we must go raise money for the exhibits.” dana.bartholomew@dailynews.com (818) 713-3730160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Besides the matching loan from the city, the funds raised will trigger a $1 million allocation from the county, bringing the total raised to $3.6 million. Faced with the prospect of the museum going dark, museum officials managed to rally more donations in 30 days than all of last year’s fundraisers combined. More than $150,000 was given by San Fernando Valley donors, including a $2,500 gift Thursday by the North San Fernando Valley Rotary. Museum officials expect to move into the Lake View Terrace building in August, where they will launch a campaign to raise $21 million for exhibits and other items needed to open its doors. last_img read more
